I’m new to this, where do I start?
Hi, I love that you’re here. You can head here to tell me about yourself so I can get to know you and your needs prior to our first session. Please read through to the end of the page to answer questions about classes I offer and my cancellation policy.
What is Pilates Reformer?
Pilates reformer is a machine that offers resistance to Pilates exercises. It’s the apparatus most associated with Pilates all over social media. My style is more contemporary to creatively expand on classical work.
What are benefits to practicing Pilates?
Pilates is a system of exercises designed to get the body to function at its best. It’s incredible work for core muscles to support and stabilize the entire body. This helps to align your spine to improve posture and range of motion. Pilates focuses on building both strength and flexibility which helps to reduce injuries and improve balance. Each session will focus on finding your best alignment and muscle engagement while you get in a great workout for the whole body. We accomplish this with utilizing the Pilates Reformer, Pilates Chair, Mat, and/or props to assist in the work. Pilates is great for all fitness levels, abilities, and body types.
What is Yoga?
Yoga takes on different definitions depending on who you ask. What I focus on in my classes are asanas (poses) and pranayama (breath) to aid in finding deeper connection in the body. My group classes may involve Vinyasa yoga which is faster paced. The opposite of this yang practice is Yin Yoga which creates a beautiful release in the connective tissues of body through holding gentle poses.
Can Pilates or Yoga help me with ___?
Probably yes to all the things. Mind body classes are great for creating balance physically, emotionally and mentally. Pilates was started with rehabilitative purposes and goes hand in hand with physical therapy. Mind body classes are low impact which is gentle on the joints while building strength. Both are great for all fitness abilities and can easily be modified
How often should I do Pilates and/or Yoga?
This is the most asked question I get. Mind body classes can be done everyday. There’s enough variety with movement, it’s low impact, and safe to practice daily. The workout itself will make you feel better in the moment, but it’ll also make your body move better in other exercises and daily living.
How do I know if I need a Solo session?
Has a healthcare professional specifically suggested private training, Pilates or Yoga to help with a condition? Have you had surgery or an injury? Are you immunocompromised and concerned about health exposure? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then a Solo session is the best place to start. It is also up to my personal discretion for assessing who may need a Solo session as an individual may have needs that are better suited for personal attention and specific goals.
My business is a home-based business which means it is not handicap accessible. There are stairs and uneven pavement involved in getting from your car to my studio. If accessibility is an issue, we can set up a Solo training session in your home using any of my portable equipment.
I have X going on in my body, can you tell me what it is?
The short answer is no. I am not a healthcare professional with years and years of medical training and expertise. It is outside of my scope of practice to diagnose or offer specific treatment. I am not a doctor, chiropractor, naturopath, nutritionist, physical therapist, etc. I can certainly work with your healthcare professional’s recommendation for your treatment to ensure you are on the right track to recovery.
Why should I do an in person session instead of streaming an online class?
There are so many apps and free classes online. I get the appeal of free and in the comfort of your living room. However, nothing replaces having a trained eye on you to make sure you’re moving safely and efficiently. I’m constantly adjusting my own posture in little things like walking my dog or cooking dinner. Small corrections translate to happier bodies. It also means you’re getting a workout better suited to your individual needs.
Can I lose weight with Pilates or Yoga?
This is always a tricky question as weight is a combination of factors. Personally, I don’t like to focus on a scale, but rather celebrate Non Scale Victories like how clothes fit, how I’m sleeping, how my posture has improved. Yes, it can help with losing weight. But also, you’ll build muscle and body awareness which translates into better overall health. If weight loss is a concern, I highly recommend consulting with a nutritionist and your primary care doctor to discuss how to achieve your goals and meet your needs.
What if I can’t make the class I signed up for?
Please unregister from the class 24 hours prior to free up space for another person. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice and no shows will require full payment for the missed session. Life happens and emergencies come up that we can’t plan for, in this case, please unregister and contact Rachel directly ASAP. No shows or regular late cancellations may result in denial of services.
What is the cancellation policy for weather?
If PPS or Tigard-Tualatin Schools cancels or delays, all morning classes will be canceled. We can pivot to a virtual session if you’d like, but I don’t want anyone risking their safety to get here.
